Fay
Greenhalgh

After renovating numerous private properties Fay trained at Michael Popper Associates, a multi-disciplinary Mechanical and Electrical Engineer consultants and gained experience from the basics of emergency lighting to working with the Director to produce bespoke fittings for many RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) award winning projects. In this time Fay hand built numerous light installations one being over 25 metres long for an adult learning centre.

For over five years Fay worked as a Senior Lighting Designer at John Cullen Lighting in London where she specialised in high end residential lighting design as well giving lectures on lighting, fittings and effects to Architects, Interior Designers, Landscape Designers and the general public.

Fay has written numerous articles on lighting for various magazines including House and Gardens, House Beautiful and Build It. Fay has also appeared on Karen Le Blancs TV show The Design Tourist (USA) to discuss energy efficient lighting ideas.

Fay’s passion for Architectural history has led to her lighting Heritage buildings such as The Jerusalem Chamber at Westminster Abbey, Madresfield Court in Malvern (UK) and The Forum, Melbourne. Fay proactively works with the end clients and Architects to produce a uniquely personal scheme for each project.

Why Did You Want To Be A Silhouette Awards Mentor?

Having started in lighting with no education in the field and working first at electrical engineers, I have fought and worked hard to get to where I am now. I have learned so much over the years not only from a lighting side but as a leader and a person with a responsibility to nurture the next generation of lighting designers. I am passionate about equality and fairness within the construction industry. And recent issues that have crept up within my own job truly make me fearful for the younger generation coming through. If I can just give one person the confidence to stick to their guns and believe in themselves and their decisions whilst learning and growing from any situations that arise early in a career, I would be very happy.
