Siddharth Mathur is a lighting designer based in Dubai, U.A.E. Born in 1979, Siddharth received a Degree in Architecture from SGU Surat, India and after a brief stint of freelance work experience as an architect in India, proceeded to specialize in Lighting from the University of Sydney, Australia.
Having inherited an artistic flair and an exquisite sense of aesthetics from his early childhood, he found himself immersed in architecture and light at an early age. A passion for light, and specifically how it interacts with space led him to study further and take up lighting design as a profession. Siddharth is a partner at Studio Lumen, a Dubai based lighting design studio. The studio is a melting pot for creativity brought about by a team from diverse backgrounds. Their work on projects in the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Indian sub-continent are a
testament to their strong design philosophy.
The concept of ‘light not luminaires’ is adhered to in all their work, and Siddharth very famously says that ‘ we are in an effect-based lighting business’ and do not pursue only technical compliance. Studio Lumen’s latest projects reinforce this philosophy and comes from hospitality & leisure, retail, F&B, and high-end residential asset types.
Why Did You Want To Be A Silhouette Awards Mentor?
I have close to 18 years experience in the field of lighting design. Since I run a lighting design studio, I have had first hand experience on all aspects of lighting design as well as project management and design management. A number of budding lighting designers have worked at my studio in the past years, and this way I have gained valuable experience in mentorship. I believe this experience will be beneficial to this program, and in future may also lead to further collaboration opportunities for the mentees and Studio Lumen.
