Ira Rothman

Ira is Senior Lighting Designer at Borealis Lighting Studio/ BR+A Consulting Engineers.
Ira grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, moved to Boston to attended Northeastern University and since, has been part of the greater Boston Lighting community since the late 1980’s.
Working life began as an Electrical Engineer with BR+A Consulting Engineers (BR+A) in the early 1990’s, then as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for a Lighting Manufacturer. To reduce travel, Ira worked locally in the greater Boston area for 22 years as a Lighting Manufacturer’s Representative. Currently, as Strategic Design Manager at the Borealis Lighting Studio, a BR+A group, his focus is Lighting Design to support BR+A projects and to also help grow Borealis’ presence as an independent lighting design studio. In addition to lighting design, Ira does quality control/quality assurance review of the other lighting designer on the Borealis team to insure consistency with project deliverables and mentors young design talent within the lighting studio. Ira has served as a board member and officer of the Boston Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), has been an IES Society At-Large Board member, the Treasurer of the IES and currently serving as the Northeast Regional Director and Board Member. Ira is chairing two IES committees, one which is drafting a new Recommending Practice (RP) for Life Science Lab Lighting and the second focused on Philanthropic outreach fund raising efforts.
Ira lives with his wife, Michelle, in Boston, enjoys sailing, skiing and home construction projects, as well as keeping informed of their six adult children’s families, activities and careers.
