Zerlina Hughes
Zerlina studied at Goldsmith’s College and the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. She has led her own lighting design studio since 2006 where they have established an excellent reputation for delivering schemes with creativity and rigour at each workstage from concept to completion.
Early in her career she worked as an assistant to director Mike Leigh on three feature fims. She was lighting design consultant for Warner Bros’ ‘Batman Begins’. Her theatre designs include projects at the National Theatre, London’s West End, New York, Broadway and Sydney Opera House. In opera, she worked extensively in France, Italy, Denmark and Sweden, where she won best lighting design award in 2003. Recent work includes the Royal Opera House, The National Theatre of Scotland and festivals in Europe and America. Zerlina formed her own award-winning lighting design practice in 2006 in London, where she heads a team of talented designers specialising in museum, gallery and architectural lighting.
Studio ZNA has completed successful projects in all the major National institutions including the National Gallery, British Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Design Museum, Royal Academy. Recent completions include total refurbishment of the Young V&A Museum and of The National Portrait Gallery opened Spring 2023, a new build museum in Odense Denmark for the Hans Christian Anderson Museum, refurbishment of the Courtauld Gallery, and the Wallace Collection, Raphael Court and Hintze Sculpture Gallery and Museum Entrance at the V&A Museum South Kensington.
Lighting design for commercial galleries includes Philips Gallery and Auction House, Colnaghi Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, David Zwirner Gallery Zerlina is a professional member of the IALD and a representative for international platform Women in Lighting. She oversees all creative direction of projects at Studio ZNA.
